Ex-voto paintings are pieces of folk art commemorating a momentous life event. Typically, an artist is commissioned to provide a rendering of the event and the words provide a narrative as well as praise and thanks to the appropriate patron saint, often the Virgin de Guadalupe.
Votive paintings are a Mexican tradition that dates back 500 years. While the style originally began in the Mediterranean region of Europe, these paintings have never been as popular as in Mexico.
Please note all ex-votos from Sur al Norte are reproductions and not originals. Original ex-votos are always treasured family heirlooms and originals on the market have most often been stolen from the owner. |
