Day of the Dead November 1 & 2
The Day of the Dead is an ancient festival that marks both the memory of the dead and the continuity of life. The holiday has a complex history and its observance varies from region to region. However, the Day of the Dead is definitely a holiday of joy and festivity throughout the country.
In most areas November 1, All Saints Day, is set aside for remembrance of deceased infants and children, sometimes referred to as “angelitos”. Adults who have passed are celebrated on November 2, All Souls Day.
The ceremonies for Day of the Dead are a family event and include the creation of a home altar welcoming the return of the dead so they may join in the celebration. The altars are often decorated with fresh flowers, food, and personal keepsakes such as diplomas and photographs of the departed. Frequently, the family members may even provide a towel and wash bowel so the deceased can freshen up before the feast.
During the Day of the Dead, family members gather at the family burial plot to spruce up grave sites. Graves are then decorated according to the local customs. This may include fresh or artificial flowers and bright colored paper decorations for the graves of young ones. |
