Alebrijes are colorfully decorated wood carvings from Oaxaca Mexico. Each figure is carved from Copal wood native to the region. Some alebrije figures represent fictional animals made from different animal features while other alebrijes are more realistic representations. One thing is certain, each alibrije is handcrafted and no two are identical.
The name “Alebrijes” was created by Pedro Linares. Pedro often dreamed of strange animals. In his dreams, the animals were making unusual sounds that he did not understand. One word he did understand was “Alebrije”. The next morning, Pedro began carving, inspired by his dream of Alebrijes.

Please note that alebrijes are hand made and hand painted. Colors used may vary and there may also be slight differences in overall size. Some alebrijes may require assembly (i.e. legs, tails and wings). |
